Lecturing in English: How to deliver clear and engaging lectures with confidence (online course)
I developed, co-wrote and and delivered this ten-module course to train support lecturers who have to deliver classes in English as a medium of instruction at RWTH Aachen University in Germany.
With contributions from Dr Petra Pointer (RWTH Aachen University, Germany), Dr Marek Kiczkowiak (Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium) and Dr Heather Marsden (University of York, UK) the course comprises ten modules:
• How to lecture with confidence as a ‘non-native’ speaker
• How to improve your English pronunciation
• How to plan and create engaging courses
• How to get the tone right
• How to use grammar to support your message
• How to overcome common grammatical challenges
• How to deal with specialised language
• How to communicate clearly and effectively with multilingual audiences
• How to use your voice to engage students
• How to keep growing as a lecturer

Each module contains two to four video lectures (for a total of nearly four hours of input) all delivered to camera by me, along with downloadable reference materials and study aids. The course is available through Aachen’s own internal virtual learning environment.

How to teach with TED Talks: A practical course for English teachers (online course)
I developed, wrote, delivered and act as tutor on this five-module course to train teachers how to teach with TED Talks and other authentic video in the classroom. The course comprises five modules:
• How to choose a TED Talk that’s perfect for your students
• How to unlock the power of TED Talk visuals in the classroom
• How to make the most of TED Talk audio in the classroom
• How to use TED Talks to teach speaking
• A few more practical considerations

Each module is divided into three lectures of five to ten minutes for a total of over two hours of lectures. The entire course, with video and assignments takes about twelve hours to complete. It is available on TEFL Equity Academy.

I developed and delivered a four-part training day, with the following sections. What you need to know about …

The course was run as four 75-minute interactive workshops.

English for aviation contexts: A short course
I developed and delivered this ten-hour course teaching techniques for structuring aviation-related presentations for maximum clarity and looking at ways to communicate effectively in situations where most or all of the people you’re talking with are also second-language users of English. It also includes practice with small talk and general conversation, and development of fluency in talking about aircraft-related equipment and processes.

Workshop: Careers in publishing
This workshop will address five questions:
1 What is publishing?
2 What does publishing (via a publisher) involve?
3 Who works in publishing?
4 How do you get into publishing (and what do you do once you’re there)?
5 What skills are useful in publishing?
6 How are e-books changing publishing?
The questions will be addressed via case studies of publishing projects and of people who work in publishing. The workshop will include hands-on, publishing-related tasks and will offer tips and resources for finding out more about the publishing industry and getting a foot in the door.

Materials Development module, MA course
As a lecturer (part time), I co-developed and co-taught with Seth Lindstromberg a materials development module for MA course in applied linguistics to experienced teachers from a variety of countries. The course project was the development of a set of potentially publishable ELT materials.

English and cross-cultural communication skills courses
As a full-time trainer at Sumitomo Electric Industries I developed and delivered courses to managers, engineers, and sales staff. This included regular classes at a factory and an office in the Kansai region as well as one- and two- week off-site courses.

Reading, speaking, listening, and academic writing courses
As a full-time adjunct instructor at the Center for English as a Second Language, University of Arizona, Tucson, I taught post-secondary students of all ability levels. The majority of students were preparing for further study at US universities. I also acted as an academic advisor.
